Waymo's hardware will go into the car at the same plant where the car itself is built. That, in Waymo's words, is what the next phase of its work with Toyota looks like.
Fact
The facts: on October 30, 2026 Toyota and Waymo announced the next phase of their collaboration, building on the preliminary agreement from April 2025. In 2027 the two companies will begin initial operations to test and validate an autonomous Toyota bZ4X fleet in Japan; deployment to the United Kingdom and other markets Waymo serves is planned for the following years. Toyota will build the vehicles at its Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, with Waymo's hardware integrated at the same plant. The two companies will continue to explore the future of autonomous driving for personally owned Toyota vehicles and, alongside Woven by Toyota, will explore additional initiatives. By Waymo's data, in the areas where it operates it is up to 20x safer than human drivers when it comes to serious crash injuries.
The personal car that drives itself is another story. The two companies will only keep exploring how autonomous driving could reach personally owned Toyota vehicles. There is no plan and no date for that.
And 2027 is a test: the announcement speaks of initial operations to test and validate. For the United Kingdom there are only the words "the following years", no date.
A test is not a taxi.
For me the news is where the hardware goes. A carmaker that puts someone else's autonomous hardware into its own plant is more committed than with a supply contract. And the 20x is Waymo's own number, and it holds for the areas where it already operates.
The first thing anyone will be able to check is the test in Japan in 2027. Until then there is a plant and a model, but no fleet size and no passenger.
