From mid-September, a profile with an AI-generated identity carries an AI Persona badge - on the banner, in search, next to every track. And by default, the algorithm recommends it to no one.
- On August 11 Spotify announced an AI Persona label for profiles whose identity is AI-generated. It takes effect in mid-September.
- By default these profiles are excluded from both editorial and algorithmic recommendations. Exception: listeners who follow them on purpose.
- The label covers identity, not production. For AI inside the music itself, Spotify keeps separate tools.
In mid-September a new badge appears on Spotify. It reads AI Persona and sits on the profile of a performer whose identity is generated: on the banner, in the bio, in search results, next to every track row.
The distinction is precise and worth a close look. A musician who uses AI in production carries no badge. The badge goes to the character: a voice, a face and a biography with no human behind them. What gets labeled is the identity lie, not the tool.
The stronger part is the quiet one. The platform does not ban AI characters. It tells them: exist, but I will not push you. The recommendation algorithm is the fuel of every streaming career, and by default it now runs on humans only.
Now I am watching the other platforms. The badge is cheap to copy and expensive to refuse. Whoever skips it has already picked a side.
