The bottleneck is not how much power there is but how many times you convert it on the way to the chip. NVIDIA, Google and Microsoft are writing a common standard through OCP; more than 80 manufacturers are already building to it.
- On 11 August NVIDIA explained the 800 VDC architecture: high-voltage direct current, fewer conversions between the grid and the accelerator.
- NVIDIA, Google and Microsoft develop it through the Open Compute Project - a joint white paper from March 2026 and a solid-state transformer specification from July 2026; more than 80 companies build to it.
- The hybrid 800 VDC power rack arrives in the second half of 2026 for existing AC buildings; the row-level power centre up to 2 megawatts - in 2027.
More than 80 manufacturers are already building to the same standard: 800 volts direct current. The bottleneck is the cable to the chip.
This is the quiet story of the week and, to me, the more important one. Models change every three months. A building's electrical installation - once. Whoever sets the cable standard now will have it for twenty years.
And look who is in the room: NVIDIA, Google, Microsoft. Not out of love, but because nobody wants to pay alone for transformers only they use. An open standard with 80 suppliers = a supply chain, not a whim.
For us, the small ones: we will not build a factory. But next time someone tells you AI is 'just software' - show them this article. There is copper and there are substations.
