JetBrains' code agent now runs locally. No credits, no quota, the code never leaves the machine. The price is the hardware: an M5 chip and at least 64 gigabytes of memory.
- Junie now runs entirely locally on Mac: no cloud, no tokens, no quota, the code stays on the machine.
- The model is Qwen 3.6-27B, quantized to 4 bits, weighing around 20 gigabytes. It wants a Mac with an M5 chip and 64 gigabytes of memory.
- Free. The features stay the same as in the cloud version.
Twenty gigabytes. That is the file. You download it once, and from there your code never leaves the machine.
Junie is JetBrains' code-writing agent. Until now it ran through the cloud and you paid per token. Now it can run entirely on your own Mac.
The tasks you get back
The point is the work you keep putting off because cloud credits hurt. Rewriting code. Adding test coverage. Bumping dependencies. Digging through an unfamiliar repo to see how it's put together. Nobody wants to pay per token for these hours, and they're exactly what makes a project bearable six months in.
They state the price straight out, and that's to their credit. It wants the latest chip and a lot of memory, that is, a machine most people don't have. They promise support for less memory and more devices, but that promise has no date yet.
