On 1 October Anthropic said British bank Barclays is expanding their collaboration and rolling Claude out across the bank. Barclays expects Claude Code to reach 50 percent of its developers by the end of 2026 and a majority of its software engineers in 2027.
- Claude will help with software development, modernising legacy systems and operations.
- The colleague assistant has been live since 2025: more than 16,000 people, over a million searches.
- In Global Markets Claude sorts about 120,000 emails a day.
A hundred and twenty thousand emails a day. That, per Anthropic, is what Claude sorts in Barclays' Global Markets business.
This is the part that rarely makes headlines. Not chat, not a demo. The inbox of a bank department, where client requests come in, and a machine deciding where each one should go and whether it has everything needed to act on.
The developer figure is the bank's expectation, not a done deal. Half the developers by the end of the year means fewer today. How many, is not said.
If you work in a regulated industry and are waiting for a big name to go first, here it is. With governance, controls and human oversight, both sides write. More interesting will be a year from now, when we see what happened to the old systems Claude is supposed to modernise.
