The French company that decided Europe shouldn't stay just a customer of foreign artificial intelligence. The only serious local player here, and one playing with an open hand.

In short: Mistral is a French company that builds artificial intelligence, and the only serious European player on a field split between American and Chinese giants. It was founded in Paris by three engineers who left Google and Meta (the company behind Facebook and Instagram) to build their own models. Some of them are open - anyone can download and use them for free on their own server, without going through an American cloud.

Mistral builds large language models - software that understands and generates text, similar to ChatGPT (OpenAI's chatbot) or Gemini (Google's model). The difference is in the approach. While most American companies keep their models locked behind paid access, Mistral releases some of theirs as open source. One of their first models became a foundation hundreds of developers around the world built their own tools on top of - chatbots, translators, assistants - without paying a license fee to anyone.

The reason Mistral exists is a mix of pride and strategy. Europe had no serious player of its own in the artificial intelligence race, only customers of American cloud and Chinese models of unclear origin. The three founders decided the continent could produce its own intelligence, not just import it. The French government and several European investors backed them exactly for this reason - technological independence, not just a business idea.

Mistral's customers are companies and institutions for whom it matters where their data lives - banks, government agencies, European firms who don't want their information passing through servers on the other side of the ocean. If you ever pick a provider for your own business, you ask yourself the same thing - who sees your data while it travels. Developers around the world use their open models because they can open them up from the inside and tune them for a specific task, instead of depending on someone else's access, which might get more expensive or disappear tomorrow.

Three years after it was founded, the company raised 3 billion euros in a Series D round at a valuation above 21 billion euros. By Mistral's account, it's the largest equity round ever closed by a European technology company. It's still a dwarf next to OpenAI or Google, but it's the only European dwarf that even counts in this game.

On October 6, 2026 Mistral released a public preview of Mistral Large 4, with the joking nickname "le Chonk". By the company's numbers the model has 1 trillion parameters, of which only 49 billion work at once, and it understands both text and images. It was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell chips in Mistral's own data centers in Europe. The weights, meaning the model itself as a download, are promised for the end of October. That's a plan Mistral announced, not a done deal. The real test of that open hand is the day anyone can download it and run it on their own server.

Mistral is the small workshop that refused to stay a subcontractor for the factory across the street.

One thing I wonder

I know the difference between buying a ready-made tool and building your own. My whole life I've built brands from scratch instead of slapping someone else's template on top. Mistral does the same thing at continent level - it refuses to be just a customer of someone else's intelligence.

Their size next to the American giants doesn't fool me. The workshop doesn't beat the factory on volume, but on knowing exactly what it produces and why. If anyone in Europe manages to hold onto some control over this technology at all, I'm betting on them, not on yet another regulatory document.
