Stripe and OpenAI launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol - a common language between merchants and AI agents. Plus payment right inside ChatGPT, and your own stablecoins with a few lines of code.
- Stripe and OpenAI launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol: an open standard between merchants and AI agents (September 30, 2025).
- Powers Instant Checkout in ChatGPT; being tested by Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic, Perplexity, Vercel and Replit.
- Separately: Open Issuance - your own stablecoin with a few lines of code, with reserves through BlackRock/Fidelity.
Over 40 announcements at one event. Only one is structural. At Stripe Tour New York this week it was the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) - an open standard, built together with OpenAI. It gives merchants and AI agents a common language, and powers Instant Checkout in ChatGPT: you pay without ever leaving the conversation.
It smells of hype - that many announcements rarely all pan out. So I watch what's structural, not what's shiny. ACP is an open standard, not locked to one platform. Instant Checkout and the stablecoins are products of Stripe. The protocol is the common language - and if it's truly common, it will outlive the products around it.
Look at it another way: a protocol that Microsoft, Anthropic and Perplexity are all trying together has a shot at becoming a common pipe. The same protocol in one owner's hands is just another gadget. So I'm not watching the announcement - I'm watching the calendar after it: does 'open' stay open once it stops being convenient.
