Qwen's new image model has 7 billion parameters in its generation component, makes transparent images and takes up to 10 reference pictures. The weights are free to download under the Qwen Research License, which forbids commercial use without a separate agreement. Alongside it Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Omni-Flash, but announced that one through its cloud, without open weights.
- Qwen-Image-2.1 combines generation and editing in one model and produces images with a transparent background on request.
- The licence defines non-commercial as research or evaluation only; commercial use needs a separate licence.
- Qwen3.8-Omni-Flash is a multimodal model with a one-million-token context, announced as available through Model Studio.
A transparent background sounds trivial until you have cut a product out of a photo by hand for a catalogue at two in the morning.
Qwen-Image-2.1 does exactly that on request: you tell it you want an image with a transparent layer and you get one. It can also go the other way - pull an object out of an ordinary photo as a separate layer you can use anywhere. For anyone making banners, storefronts and catalogues, that is the most useful thing in the whole announcement.
What the licence says
Two sentences decide everything. The first grants the right to use, copy, modify and distribute the model for non-commercial purposes only. The second says non-commercial means research or evaluation, and nothing more.
So you can download it, try it, compare it with what you use today. You cannot put it under a client's paid storefront without a separate agreement with them. The licence is governed by Chinese law, and disputes go to the courts in Hangzhou.
The omni model is the other direction of the same day: strong and cheap per Alibaba, and announced through their cloud.
For production work, stay with a tool whose licence you have read to the end. Qwen-Image-2.1 is for the trial, so you know how far open models have come.
