Media reported a deal for all of Boston Dynamics. On 16 July Hyundai announced it officially, without a price.

Hyundai Motor GroupRobotics

As of July 13, 2026, neither Hyundai, nor SoftBank, nor Boston Dynamics has announced anything. The numbers - the remaining 9.65% for $325 million - come only from media. We wrote them up as done fact. Mistake.

In short
  • Confirmed officially: nothing. As of July 13, 2026, there's no official announcement of the deal from Hyundai, SoftBank, or Boston Dynamics.
  • Reported by media (KED Global; Global Banking & Finance, citing Reuters): Hyundai is buying SoftBank's remaining 9.65% for $325 million, with the deadline on SoftBank's put option set at July 20.
  • Our mistake: the original text claimed Hyundai 'is buying out' the stake and 'becoming sole owner.' That's a report, not an announced deal.
  • Publicly known from before: Hyundai has controlled Boston Dynamics since 2021. That was officially announced back then and isn't in dispute.
  • Reported, without an official document on our end: the plan for the production Atlas to go to work at Hyundai's plant in Georgia, and a ballpark price of around $320 thousand per robot.

We presented it as a done fact that Hyundai is buying out SoftBank's remaining 9.65% and becoming sole owner of Boston Dynamics. As of July 13, 2026, the deal hasn't been officially announced by either party, and the only sources are media. The headline, dek, and text have been rewritten as a report rather than a fact, the sources are labeled as media, and a 'Risk / uncertainty' box has been added. Updated 1 October 2026: on 16 July 2026 Hyundai Motor Group officially announced that it is pursuing SoftBank's entire stake. The old headline "The companies stay silent" was no longer true and has been changed.

A correction, and a substantial one. We wrote that Hyundai is buying out SoftBank's remaining 9.65% and becoming sole owner of Boston Dynamics - as a done fact, with a present-tense headline. It isn't fact, because as of July 13, 2026, none of the three parties has officially announced the deal.

Updated 1 October 2026: on 16 July 2026, Hyundai Motor Group issued an official statement. It says Hyundai Motor Group shareholders are pursuing the acquisition of SoftBank's entire stake in Boston Dynamics under the parties' existing agreements, after SoftBank gave notice that it is exercising its put option. The transaction remains subject to approvals, settlement procedures and decisions by the parties, and the split of the shares among them will follow the existing agreements. The statement gives no amount and no percentage. It also says the group plans to deploy Atlas at its Metaplant America plant from 2028.

What we don't have: an official announcement from Hyundai, SoftBank, or Boston Dynamics; a regulatory filing; a confirmed figure from either party to the deal. What we have: reports from KED Global (a South Korean business outlet) and Global Banking & Finance (citing Reuters), saying Hyundai is buying the remaining 9.65% for $325 million, with SoftBank's put option (the right to sell a stake at a pre-agreed price) expiring on July 20. These numbers may well turn out to be accurate. Today they're journalism, not a record.
It might turn out true. That doesn't make it a fact today.

The difference isn't formal. 'Hyundai became sole owner' is an event with a date. 'Media report Hyundai will become sole owner' is an expectation that can slip, get reshaped, or never happen at all. We owe the reader the first version only once one of the parties says it under their own name.

What stays certain even without the deal: Hyundai has controlled Boston Dynamics since 2021 - that was officially announced at the time. The direction is also hard to argue with. The financial investor exits, the industrial one stays.

And if the deal is confirmed, the reading stays the same - the robot stops being an asset that changes hands and becomes part of the manufacturing strategy of a company that builds its own plants and its own actuators. Except 'if' goes before the sentence, not after it. Once the deal is announced, we'll report it as announced. Until then, this is where it stands.

Risk / caveat

The deal hasn't been officially announced by any of the parties. The only sources are media citing anonymous people and non-public documents. The numbers (9.65%, $325 million, July 20) aren't confirmed by Hyundai, SoftBank, or Boston Dynamics.
