On 28 September AMD signed a definitive agreement for World Labs, the lab that builds models for generating and simulating 3D worlds. The deal is all stock and is expected to close by the end of 2026 if regulators approve. Fei-Fei Li is to become AMD's chief scientist.
- The deal is announced, not closed. It is expected by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
- World Labs builds models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, images or video.
- AMD explains the move simply: to build hardware for tomorrow's models, it wants to see up close how they are built.
A chip maker is buying a lab that builds models. At first glance it is like a printing house buying a publisher.
AMD does not hide why. To build hardware for the next models, it wants to see from the inside where they are heading. World Labs builds spatial-intelligence models: from text, images or video they generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments, plus technology for robot learning and simulation.
It is not the first such move in two months. In August AMD agreed to buy Taalas, which hard-wires the model into the silicon itself. Now it is taking on people who build models for 3D and robotics, a workload that looks nothing like chat. The direction is one: the chip maker wants to know what it will be asked for before anyone asks.
One thing the announcement does not say. It talks about an "open AI ecosystem", but not a word on whether World Labs' models will be open.
Closing is expected by the end of the year, if regulators approve it. As of today there is a signature, and no purchase yet.
